I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If water is still leaking, turn off the water at the nearest access point or at the mains tap outside. If you cannot find the main shutoff valve or a tap to the fixture, then turn on the cold faucets inside and out to help depressurise the pipework and minimise the leak.

While you wait for our emergency plumber, remove any important items, mop up any water, and put a bucket to catch drips. You should also switch off the hot water heating if the main water is turned off.
